The Best Time to Visit the Andaman Islands (and What to Pack)

All articles

Turquoise water year-round — but the season you pick changes everything from ferry schedules to snorkelling visibility. Here's how to time your Andaman trip.

The Andaman & Nicobar Islands are one of India's most rewarding beach destinations — think powder-white sand, coral reefs and the famous sunset at Radhanagar Beach. But because the islands run on ferries and sea conditions, when you go matters just as much as where you stay.

After running group departures to the Andamans for years, here's the honest, season-by-season guide we share with our own travellers.

October to May: the sweet spot

This is peak season for good reason. The sea is calm, skies are clear, and inter-island ferries to Havelock and Neil run reliably. Underwater visibility is at its best, so if snorkelling at Elephant Beach or a glass-bottom boat ride is on your list, plan for these months.

December and January are the busiest — book hotels and ferries well in advance. February to May stays warm and calm with slightly thinner crowds.

June to September: the monsoon trade-off

The monsoon brings lush greenery and lower prices, but also choppier seas and the occasional ferry cancellation. If you're flexible and budget-conscious, it can still be a beautiful trip — just keep a buffer day in your itinerary.

What to pack

  • Light cottons, swimwear and a quick-dry towel
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses
  • Water shoes for rocky entry points
  • A dry bag for phones and cameras on boat rides
  • Any regular medication — pharmacies are limited on smaller islands

Make it effortless

Ferries, permits and island transfers are the fiddly part of an Andaman trip. Our 4-night Andaman Island Escape bundles all of it — hand-picked stays, ferry tickets, sightseeing and pure-veg breakfasts — so you only think about the sunsets.
